High intensity interval training (HIIT) is a form of exercise that involves repeated short intense bursts of hard exercise with recovery periods. In a true HIIT workout, the body relies on anaerobic pathways for energy. This is an immediate but limited source, meaning the body can only sustain the maximum effort for a short period of time, generally about 20 seconds. The rest periods between efforts are a crucial part of the workout, as training the body to go between two different states of motion is great conditioning. HIIT workouts offer many benefits. It is especially useful for athletes, who are trying to achieve maximum conditioning. It increases the amount of oxygen individuals can use during exercise and improves blood pressure and cardiovascular function. It burns a lot of calories in a short period with research showing that HIIT burns 25 to 30 percent more calories than other forms of exercise. HIIT also boosts a person’s metabolic rate for hours, meaning continual calorie burning even after a workout. Like most exercise, HIIT can help people lose weight and gain muscle.
